Goshin Karate Goes Green.... Saving the Planet is Self Defense....

Tips to Reduce Plastic: Tip#1

It is not too early to start making your New Year’s Resolution... I am making mine today to reduce the amount of plastic in my life. I am inspired by EnviiroWoman quest of living Plastic Free. (She is going on her 3rd Year) I don't know if I can be as Plastic Free as her but I want to make a serious effort to at least be Single Use Plastic Free by 2010.

I thought I'd share EnviroWoman’s Top 10 ways to reduce plastic, based on a year’s worth of experience. So here's Tip#1...

Bring your own bag.

When shopping (not just grocery shopping, but for any shopping) take along your own packing bag.  We are giving out FREE Cloth bags at Goshin Karate & Judo Academy the entire month of December 2009 or until supplies last.

Just make sure it’s made of cotton, canvas or a natural fiber (like these cheeky ones from BringYourOwnBag). A bag made out of nylon (which is plastic) or recycled plastic is still plastic, so in a way, you’re kinda defeating your good intentions.

And if you’re shopping for a big family – bring a box instead of a bag. Hey if it’s okay at Costco, why isn’t it okay for Safeway, Albertsons and Fry's Food stores?

When grocery shopping "EnviroWoman" takes her handy wire basket along and uses it to pack her groceries in and out of the store. She LOVE her wire basket. She is the only person in the supermarket who has one...so it makes her feel like an UberEnviroTrendSetter. (Dillusionary, isn't she?)

She also uses a big canvas bag from Ellis Designs (no plastic handles, or buttons, but alas, a plastic inside pocket zipper), which does double duty as a purse for regular shopping.

There are lots of options to choose from nowadays. Just google 'cloth shopping bag' or 'reusable shopping bag'. Or, attend a local craft sale.

..... EnviroWomanRANT Time ........

You may have noticed it's becoming more ‘fashionable’ to bring your own bag. And that’s a great thing.

The big Big chain stores are even charging for bags or not even offering them, or at least selling a reusable alternative (alas, many of which are nylon-plastic). All good things.

But at the same time, it bugs EnviroWoman. Here’s why...

People think that if they bring their own bag they are doing their part to save the planet. They pat themselves on the back for being ‘green’.

But then they walk into the supermarket and fill their shopping carts with plastic packaged food, buy plastic wrapped coconuts (SpockIllogical), put fruits and veggies in plastic bags, buy bottled water, opt for stuff in a plastic bottles versus glass because 'it’s so much more convenient and safe' (maybe for them, but not for Mother Earth, which in the long means it’s not for them either). And so on, and so on.

Where is the 'green' action in that?

They do not see the irony.

Now, EnviroWoman ain’t no eco-Saint. She admits she didn’t see the irony in this either before taking the NoNewPlasticPledge.

But now EnviroWoman does.

And if you stand really close to her in the checkout line, looking at all those plastic filled shopping carts….you can hear her screaming inside. There is no hope. We humans are a lost cause. The planet is on a FastTrackToDisaster.

Sorry if I burst your EcoBubble here. But let's face it, Tip #1 is not enough.

Bringing your own shopping bag is only a wee baby step on the path that takes you to 'living green'. Truth is....you still have a long, long, long way to go. Lots more behaviours to change. Scary. Sad. But necessary.

Now, don't go give up. Instead, cheer up. 'Dudes and Chicky-Poos"  Cuz you're in good company. EnviroWoman still has a long, long way to go too.

Tip #1 may be a baby step, but it’s still a baby step worth taking.

Goshin Karate Supports the Tuesday Turkey Drive

 Turkey Tuesday

I am dropping off my Turkey today and would like to put a challenge out to all Martial Arts Schools (Not just the ones here in Phoenix Arizona) but all Martial Arts, Karate, Judo, Jujitsu, Krav Maga or MMA schools (you know who you are) any where in the country to get out and support your local community.

“The need in our community has never been so critical,” said Steve Zabilski, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul. “This year, more families are asking us for help. They’re living on the economic edge, struggling to stay in their homes, pay their bills and feed their families.”

The nation's largest one-day turkey drive, will take place today - Tuesday, Nov. 24.

On this designated Tuesday, 80 Bashas' and Food City stores here in Arizona will be collecting frozen turkeys and monetary donations for St. Vincent de Paul.

Now in its 16th year, 12 News Turkey Tuesday has become a Thanksgiving tradition for many Arizona families, schools and businesses.

How to donate:

1. Drop off a monetary donation or frozen turkey on Tuesday, November 24 from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. at any Bashas' or Food City Store in the Valley or Northern Arizona.

2. Donate during our phonebank Tuesday, November 24 from 4 – 7pm (phone number: 602-258-1212 or outside Maricopa County 1 – 888-838-5769)

3. Donate turkeys online now!

All donations will benefit hungry families just in time for Thanksgiving. According to St. Vincent de Paul, a local non-profit that cooks and distributes more than 3,000 meals each day to the hungry, turkey donations are the key to meeting an increased demand this year.

From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Turkey Tuesday, 12 News Sports Anchor Bruce Cooper and Weather Anchor James QuiƱones will challenge one another to see who can collect the most turkeys for St. Vincent de Paul. KTAR personalities Gambo & Ash and Mac & Gaydos will join the challenge, broadcasting live throughout the day. Individuals unable to visit a store on Turkey Tuesday can call the 12 News phone bank or make an online donation at http://www.stvincentdepaul.net/.

During last year's Turkey Tuesday drive, Arizonans donated a record 26,432 frozen turkeys, which fed thousands of local, needy families. St. Vincent de Paul volunteers collected the frozen birds, and packaged thousands of the donated turkeys into food boxes, which were immediately delivered to hungry families throughout Arizona.

http://www.azcentral.com/12news/turkeytuesday/

“We’re so thankful for this annual turkey drive because it helps us to meet the strong need we’re facing,” said Zabilski. “Even when times are tough, we’re blessed by the generosity of our community.”

In addition to the one-day drive, during the month of November, all Bashas’ and Food City stores statewide will be selling $1 paper turkey icons to benefit St. Vincent de Paul. Customers can customize the turkey-shaped icons by writing in what they are most thankful for this holiday season. To find a Bashas’ or Food City store near you, visit http://www.bashas.com/ or http://www.myfoodcity.com/.

Karate kids learn about the Problems with Plastic

Floating on Trash
These guys are traveling on a boat made with recycled bottles from
California to Hawaii to make a point about greening the earth.

Self Defense is more than kicking and punching...  So much more...

After 87 days at sea Dr. Marcus Eriksen and Joel Paschal pulled into Honolulu on August 27 having traveled 2,600 miles from Long Beach, California, on nothing but junk.

The two sailed on the Junk Raft, a makeshift sailboat constructed from 15,000 plastic bottles fastened together with discarded fishing nets, old masts, and a cabin crafted from the cockpit of a Cessna 310.

Eriksen and Paschal took the journey to call attention to the Pacific Gyre, a mass of debris roughly twice the size of Texas that’s swirling clockwise in the North Pacific. “It’s like a toilet bowl that never flushes,” says Eriksen, who served as a U.S. Marine in the first Gulf war.

On a boat with a top speed of just 3.2 knots (less than 4 mph), the two kept busy blogging and catching fish, some of which had stomachs full of plastic. Says Paschal: “Plastic is forever, and it’s everywhere.”

Thank you for doing this! It is horrible what plastic trash is doing to our oceans and our wildlife. I recently saw a documentary on National Geographic about the literal sea of plastic and the Albatross who die with their stomachs filled with plastic debris. Thank you for doing something to raise awareness!

People look but they pretend they don't see....
Where do you think it comes from?  It doesn't grow on trees?

Reminding the Karate Kids about Veterans Day

Goshin Karate & Judo Academy is closed today in observance of Veteran's Day.

What Is A Veteran?

by Marine Corp Chaplain,
Father Denis Edward O'Brian

Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye. Others may carry the evidence inside them, a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in the refinery of adversity.

Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell a vet just by looking. What is a vet?

A vet is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel.

A vet is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th Parallel.

A vet is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang.

A vet is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come back at all.

A vet is the drill instructor who has never seen combat - but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account punks and gang members into marines, airmen, sailors, soldiers and coast guardsmen, and teaching them to watch each other's backs.

A vet is the parade-riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand.

A vet is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by.

A vet is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb of the Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep.

A vet is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come.

A vet is an ordinary and yet extraordinary human being, a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs.

A vet is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more that the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known.

So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say, "Thank You." That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded.

Again... two little words that mean a lot to any Veteran -- "THANK YOU."

Phoenix Karate instructors support a Ban on Single Use Plastic Bags

It does seem like it is time to Ban the Bags....

We will be encouraging our Karate & Judo students here in Phoenix & Scottsdale to recycle their single-use plastic bags and to utilize reusable bags every time they shop. I plan to order some durable reusable bags to give away to our Karate Kids. They will be manufactured from recycled material that is also easily recycled when the bags are worn out,"

I want to educate our Karate Kids to Reduce-Reuse-Recycle and a Ban the Bag campaign is a great extra push to reinforce and remind us all.

Did you know.... Around 100 billion petroleum-based plastic checkout bags are used each year in the United States, requiring an estimated 12 million barrels of oil each year.

Did you know... A ban on plastic bags would help preserve the integrity of our local ecosystems, reduce the burden on landfills, and cut back litter within the city premises.

Did you know... About 90 percent of the bags used in the United States are NOT recycled.

We have reached a point where it is unconscionable to continue using single use plastic bags or bottles. Here are some of the reasons why:

1. Americans throw away 100 billion single use plastic bags every year.

2. Most of the estimated 14 billion pounds of trash dumped in the world’s oceans is plastic.

3. Plastic bags and other plastic garbage kill as many as 1 million sea creatures every year....

4. 2.5 million plastic bottles are produced hourly.

5. Americans throw away more than 60 million plastic water bottles daily.

6. Americans generate 10.5 million tons of plastic waste a year but recycle only 1 or 2 % of it.

Efforts to use fewer plastic bags and bottles begin with me... It begins with you....

Random Act of Kindness Day planned for next Friday - Kindness Hall of Fame

World Kindness Day set for Friday November 13th 2009

If you're like the majority of us, you're busy. A typical day has you working eight to 10 hours, running yourself or your kids to Karate, guitar, dance lessons or whatever else you've gotten yourself involved in, plus you've got to find the time to pick up the groceries you've been putting off getting for the last two weeks and now you only have a can of creamed corn left in your cupboard.

You're moving so fast that you don't have much time to acknowledge when someone lets you in on the highway much less what's going on in the community around you. Wouldn't it be nice to slow down for once and say, "Hey, thanks!"?

Random Act of Kindness Day is a day to celebrate those little niceties and encourage others to pay those "acts of kindness" forward.

"We live in an amazing community where so much kindness happens every day. Let's take a moment to not only recognize when someone does something nice for us, but to also do something nice in return,"

Friday, Nov. 13 is World Kindness Day. There are many different types of action that people can use as their kind act:

Each act provides us with an opportunity to connect with a member of our community.

Some Kind Ideas:

Hold the elevator or door for someone.

Slow down, smile at your colleagues, neighbors and strangers—we all smile in the same language!

Let that car get in front of you.

Give blood or better yet organize a blood drive!

Buy a treat or coffee for your colleagues (or that harried looking mom behind you in line).

Sign your organ donor card.

Register with the Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor Registry, you may never be called on but what a difference it could make to someone who desperately needs this life saving fluid.

Learn Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid—you are most likely to save the life of someone you know if you have these skills.

Call someone you have not spoken to in a while to catch up and to show them that you care and are thinking about them.

Make time for that “needy” friend or relative for to be lonely and isolated is a cruel place.

Listen with compassion.

Give a compliment.

Help someone with his or her tasks even though it is not really your “job”, especially because it is not “your” job.

Tell someone why you appreciate him or her and what makes him or her special.

Show your appreciation to your boss, co-workers, bank tellers, your babysitter and everyone you see in a day.

Share positive news and quotes with others.

Write a commendation letter (such as an ‘atta boy/girl or an “above and beyond” card) about a co-worker or a service worker and send it to their boss.

Say thank you and mean it.

Concentrate on the positive.

Volunteer.

Share with us your Acts of Kindness

https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=8186829832650938427&postID=5572664368017707111&isPopup=true

Each act provides us with an opportunity to connect with a member of our community.

Roger Boggs, the Owner of Goshin Karate & Judo Academy, is the lead sponsor of this year's Random Act of Kindness Day and says, "Random Act of Kindness Day is directly in line with what we believe in here at our Martial Art school and hope that all the Martial Arts School in Phoenix Arizona follows our lead."

Random acts of kindness are a great way to touch the life of another person and make our community and our world a better place.
